its about who you know.
We have heard this statement in our lives at some point or another. Whether pertaining to finding a job, or to meeting someone special, or to getting some privileged item. I want to focus on this simple yet powerful statement in relation to Christianity based upon Pastor Jack’s commentary this morning that went a little something like this:
God: What do you know?
Jack: uhhhhh ….. not a whole lot?
God: Well, then Who do you know?
Jack: uhhhhh ….. I know Jesus!
God: Alright, come in [heaven].
I wanted to take it one step further and ask what good does it do to know someone, when they don’t know you? We all know of people and know about them. I know the President of the United States, I know Miley Cyrus, I know Michael Jordan. But these are all “know ofs.” Will any of that translate into getting me into the White House to hang out, or on the next episode of Hannah Montana, or even a game with the greatest of all time? I think that’s a big a no. Knowing of these people doesn’t do me jack because they don’t know me. In the same way, our Christian life has to be the same. Knowing of Jesus Christ isn’t the same as knowing Him. We need to know Him on a personal level and walk each day with Him.
Christianity isn’t a state of mind, feeling, society, church membership, or whatever else you can name. It doesn’t matter how you felt when you received Christ because there is no feeling, only knowing that God is alive in you and working in your life until He completes that work. Going to a certain church over another doesn’t give you a VIP ride to heaven either. We as a people have grown accustomed to believing in merit based works and my way is better than someone else’s way. We need to remember that Christ through His love and grace forgives us of our sins and bridges us with the Father.
“By grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast.” –Ephesians 2:8-9
I wonder, when Christ was born if He came out draped in fine wrapping paper and a bow, because isn’t He such an amazing gift from God above?
We forget so easily that though our Creator God is magnificent as He is, knows ours struggles, triumphs, sadness’, success’, on a daily basis and always invites us to walk and talk with Him. All that He asks is that we spend time in our days getting to know Him. Therefore I can repeat again, Christianity is a relationship. I have written before on this topic and believe you cannot truly know someone unless you spend time and put energy into the relationship. The same principle applies here. It does you no good if you know about God, His nature, His stories from the Bible if you do not “know” Him. You can stalk God all you want but if He doesn’t live in you and abound daily by your actions, how can you say you know Him. One example we can look at is the scribes and Pharisees.
‘“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.’ – Matthew 23:25-26
As religious leaders of the time, scribes and Pharisees were known to be people who meticulously knew the Word, were masters at keeping to the traditions of men, and for priding themselves in being able to keep the law. In front of men they appeared to be men of God, deep down though, God knew the heart. These were men looking for self-glory and to be praised in the streets for their self-righteousness. These jokers of men didn’t even recognize the Holy God incarnate when He was right in front of them. Friends, lets not become like these men who claimed to have known God and the scriptures, but rather lets become children that would recognize God by His nature when we hear His call. It does a person no good when you have all that knowledge but don’t know how to carry it out and live by it. Because they didn’t know Christ and have the power of the Holy Spirit working within, they could only know of God without ever having the ability to know and experience the God they knew of so much.
Lets be careful not to get trapped like them. Can we stop being “Sunday Christians” and those who believe citizenship in a certain nation or a strong family history of Christianity can be inherited? Can we stop believing that one prayer before we sleep or one envelope in the offering plate a week is going to cover the cost of our weekly skin? Can we stop reading one chapter a day and priding ourselves like we did our God a favor? Let’s stop kidding ourselves and live wholeheartedly for Christ. Anything less would not only be cheating ourselves, but falling short of living for His glory.
And how do we do this you might ask? How else, the same way you get to know anyone else. If you want to know God, you have to spend time with Him. I think we can all honestly say that we never do this enough. We need to: pray more and play less, worship more and whine less, listen more and demand less, spend more time on our knees instead of in front of the TV, more time in the Book and less on Facebook. Or maybe that’s just me. We need to do these things that we might become like Him.
I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. – John 10:14
He knows each and every one of us. And for those that are privileged enough to know Him, cant help but bow at His feet and praise Him for all of His glory. I love the fact that Christ came to pay our cost through the sacrifice of His blood in order to redeem us, and also that He also stands interceding on our behalf. Therefore, I believe as believers, we not only need to stress knowing Him, but also knowing Him more and more each day.
In my head, I envision the day of judgment with God (Yĕhovah), sitting on His throne as the Judge while our defense lawyer Jesus (‘adown), showcasing a flawless legal record and never one to find a case He couldn’t win, constantly litigates on our behalf in order to throw out any sin in our lives that prevents us from receiving His Kingdom. Mind you, this is a constant job that requires His service 24/7, 365 and then some. We are lucky that He doesn’t take breaks and that he works pro bono. Not even a bailout would be able to pay that off. May I say good luck sirs and ma’ams if you do not have Jesus defending you in this courtroom because your case will surely lose.
“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.”’ – John 14:6
“There is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.” – I Tim. 2:5
My prayer tonight, and every night hereafter, would be to that we will take time out of our day to listen to Him, to know Him, and to do the things in this life that He has planned for us. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. – John 10:27
And I’ll end with this, its not about what you know, or even who you know, its about who knows you. And I know Jesus knows me and has my name written in His Lambs Book of Life. Does Jesus know you?
‘“Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able. When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open for us,’ and He will answer and say to you, ‘I do not know you, where you are from,’ then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.’ But He will say, ‘I tell you I do not know you, where you are from. Depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity.’’ – Luke 13:24-27
